Massive setback for Gujarat Titans! IPL 2025 season is turning out to be a rollercoaster ride for the Gujarat Titans (GT), and now they face another blow as star all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a groin injury. This unfortunate incident took place during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6, leaving the team without one of their key players.
“Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery,” said the franchise in an official statement.
Phillips hasn’t played a single match for the team yet in this season but was expected to make a big impact. Gujarat picked him up during the mega auction for a base price of Rs 2 crore, hoping he would bring his skills to the squad. Now, finding a replacement for him could be a major challenge for GT as they look to continue their winning streak.
While the team already has a few strong players, Phillips’ absence will be felt, especially considering his exceptional fielding abilities. With a few foreign players currently tied up with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, GT might need to look for options like Jonny Bairstow or Dewald Brevis to fill the gap. Additionally, earlier in the season, Kagiso Rabada had to return home due to personal reasons, reducing GT’s overseas options further.
At present, Gujarat Titans have five overseas players in their squad, including Gerald Coetzee and Karim Janat, who are yet to make their debut. In the last three games, the team has opted to play with just three foreign players, balancing the squad for the upcoming challenges.
Despite this setback, GT remains on top of the points table with four wins out of five matches, thanks to their solid performances and superior net run rate (NRR) over Delhi Capitals (DC), who are still undefeated. During the initial games, GT preferred Sherfane Rutherford over Phillips in the middle order for power-hitting, and Rutherford’s performance has been nothing short of impressive, scoring 136 runs from five innings at an explosive strike rate of 178.94.
With GT leading the points table, all eyes will be on their next moves to keep up their momentum, even with this key player’s absence.
